A magnetic tape, used as a storage medium in the data center, symbolizes the vast volumes of data that are indispensable for science and innovation today. Rather than remaining hidden, the data emerge from the data center—an allusion to the Helmholtz Association’s Open Science policy. Flowing down the hillside in the form of a magnetic tape enlarged to monumental proportions, they sweep across the landscape toward the office building. The tape-wave unfurls over the flower meadow and crashes in a spray-like motion against the transverse hedges.
The black ribbon traces a loose, fluid line through the space between the buildings, yet its scale and downward momentum give it a commanding presence. Perceptible and experienceable from multiple perspectives, the artwork transcends conventional sculpture and embraces the entire space. The planting becomes an integral part of the artwork and, in addition to its spatial and aesthetic qualities, seeks to create a habitat for humans, animals, and plants alike.
The additional trimmed hedges, the expanded flower meadow sown with regionally sourced seeds, and the dry, nutrient-poor soil all serve as habitats that support the preservation of biodiversity. In this way, the artwork becomes a place that, in the spirit of the Helmholtz Center, actively contributes to a sustainable future.
