Seven Hop Poles
Kunstvilla Nuremberg
2014
hop poles, wire ropes
height 6m
Seven hop poles in a row, set up in the small courtyard that is left over of the former Kunstvilla’s garden. Having spent decades on a field in the Franconian hinterland, the hop poles interact with the historic and spatial context of the building. Before the Second World War Nuremberg was regarded as the international world trading center for hops. Produced in Nuremberg’s surrounding area, in the Marienvorstadt the hops were dried and sold.
Estranged from their original context and reconfigured as a sculptural work, on the one hand the poles structure the building’s eastern front. On the other, with the widening of space the poles move towards the facade and attack it, only to then draw back towards the wall and create generous space. An accessible place is established within the sculpture. Indoors and outdoors are interweaved.
